Nora was looking forward to the training programme which she had been hired to conduct at Syarikat Ceria Selalu. She was an experienced trainer and enjoyed meeting people from different organizations. However, when she arrived at Syarikat Ceria Selalu, a company for which she had never previously conducted training, she was shocked. Upon arriving at the main gate of the large factory compound, she found that the security staff had not been informed that a training programme was being organized that day. Further, as they didn’t seem to speak much Bahasa Malaysia or English, she could not explain to them that she needed to find the Training Department. They waved her in the general direction of the main office lobby where the HR Officer was contacted by the receptionist, who also did not know about the planned training. She had to wait nearly half an hour before the HR Officer arrived to take care of her to the meeting room which was being used for the training. It was immediately clear to Nora that the room was totally unsuitable for her needs, which she had made clear by email and telephone to the HR Officer. It was too small – there weren’t even enough chairs for the number of participants expected. The screen for projection of slides was a piece of paper stuck on a side wall, and the U-shaped table was fixed to the floor, leaving no room for discussion groups. Worse still, the trainees’ chairs were discoloured and in some the fabric was ripped so that the stuffing could be seen. There wasn’t a chair provided for the trainer and neither was there anywhere for her to put her personal belongings. Lastly, she realized after a few minutes in the room that the noise of the machines in the factory could clearly be heard in the room.
HR Officer apologized for the lack of facilities and told Nora that training was very rare in their company so they had no dedicated training room or more suitable space for the programme. Nora was a professional so she refrained from commenting on the unsuitable room but she believed she would have to work hard to make up the deficiencies.
