Botswana’s ban on smoking in the workplace seems not to have triggered a feared collapse in its drinking industry in the six months following its introduction. Many bar owners have complained that their sales have suffered since Botswana became the first country in Africa to introduce a workplace smoking ban on 29 March 2015, but this is nothing like the meltdown that some had predicted. The Moquena Liquor Bar Owners Association (MLBOA), which represents pub owners in Gaborone, claims that about 2,000 jobs in the drinks industry have been lost and that, on average, Gaborone pub sales are 16% lower. MLBOA Rural, which represents some 60,000 rural bars, says that sales have fallen by an average of 15 to 25%. Without a doubt the bar owners who have suffered most are those closest to Bulawayo, where smokers can still puff away over a Two Keys Bottle. Use demand and supply diagrams to explain some of the impacts of the smoking ban on bars in Botswana.

Annuity payments are assumed to come at the end of each payment period (termed an ordinary annuity). however, an exception occurs when the annuity payments come at the beginning of each period (termed an annuity due). what is the future value of a 13-year annuity of $2,800 per period where payments come at the beginning of each period? the interest rate is 9 percent. use appendix c for an approximate answer, but calculate your final answer using the formula and financial calculator methods. to find the future value of an annuity due when using the appendix tables, add 1 to n and subtract 1 from the tabular value. for example, to find the future value of a $100 payment at the beginning of each period for five periods at 10 percent, go to appendix c for n = 6 and i = 10 percent. look up the value of 7.716 and subtract 1 from it for an answer of 6.716 or $671.60 ($100 × 6.716)
