Political ideology toward foreign direct investment (FDI) has ranged from a dogmatic radical stance that is hostile to all inward FDI at one extreme to an adherence to the noninterventionist principle of free market economics at the other.

Political ideology toward FDI can be viewed as radical, free market, or pragmatic nationalism. The radical view is hostile toward FDI, whereas the free market view believes in considering resource costs globally when it comes to investing in foreign countries. Pragmatic nationalism views FDI as having both benefits and costs and is in the middle of the other two extreme viewpoints.
