Extrinsic rewards
rewards that are tangible, visible to others, and given to employees contingent on the performance of specific tasks or behaviours
External agents (e. g., managers) determine and control the distribution, frequency, and amount of extrinsic rewards such as pay, company stock, benefits, and promotions. Gibraltar Solutions (an IT solutions provider based in Mississauga, Ontario) provides some nice extrinsic rewards.
For example, 15-year employees get an all-expenses-paid Caribbean trip. "It confirms their work is valued," says human resources director Joan Hughson. "And when employees know that, their satisfaction and productivity rises."
