You convene a group of employees to decide how to best restructure the company’s customer service process. Each person is asked to first make a list of ideas for five minutes with no discussion. Members then take turns explaining their ideas to the group, and as they are recorded on a flip chart other members are encouraged to build on the previous ideas. Voting is periodically taken to reduce the list until a decision is made. Complex problems are more appropriate for groups than for individual decision makers. The more decentralized an organization is, the more its employees tend to participate in decision-making. When groupthink occurs, the group unknowingly makes unanimity rather than reaching the best decision its goal.
