Place your hands palms down, next to each other on your desk. keep your fingers close together, and hook your thumbs beneath your desk. now push your hands tightly together. where do you feel pressure? how does this relate to the pressure between two plates?

The pressure is felt mostly along the index fingers. The two hands model two plates. So, just as the index finger feels the most pressure when the hands are pushed together, two plates moving together create high pressure along the boundary between them.
