The survival of the sperm in the reproductive tract is dependent on the fertility of the woman. The sperm survives on the energy and food it produces with the help of its mitochondria.

When the sperms are deposited in the vagina, they have to survive the barrage or environmental conditions. The semen that suspends the sperms is alkaline and is full of sugar. This sugar will help the sperm to survive. After deposition, the semen becomes thinner due to the enzyme Prostate specific antigen (PSA). The semen that helped keep the sperms alive then drips out of the vagina together with the lubrication that was used during sexual intercourse and only sperms are left in the vagina. In this period around a few hours after deposition, some sperms will die. The sperms now have to swim up the cervix and in order to pass the cervix, the lady must be in the ovulation period when the cervical mucus plug becomes thin to allow them to pass. Those with defective tails and mitochondria fail to swim uphill. After around 12 hours, they successfully reach the uterus. They do not proceed to the fallopian tube until they can detect an egg has been released. They use up their energy to keep flapping their tails and suspending in the uterine walls until a maximum 6 days are over.
