A motor neuron or motoneuron is a neuron whose cell body is located in the CNS-Central Nervous System (brain or the spinal cord), and whose axon (fiber) directly or indirectly control effector organs, like muscles and glands. Motoneuron is a part of PNS-Peripheral Nervous System  which is serving as a relay between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body. Motoneurons are also called efferent  neurons to indicate the flow of information from the CNS to the periphery. The axon of motoneuron forms a neuromuscular junction with the effectors (muscles). A neuromuscular junction allows motoneuron to transmit a signal to the muscle fiber, causing muscle contraction. Motoneurons release acetylcholine (ACh) as neurotransmiter.
