Darwin had far reaching effects that could not be totally proved until the science of genetics was developed. Lamarack was not as important a consideration as the idea that Darwin's natural selection was revolutionary as soon as it was stated and Darwin had many more facts to back this up. 

Not all scientists were against Darwin. Many were for him. He had more doubts than anyone in his theory.  He was a trained theologian and he stated openly that if he ever found a species of one kind evolving from another in a very short period of time, he would abandon evolution.
