B. Growth of cell and replication of DNA

Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle. The prefix 'inter' reflects that it takes place between two mitotic (M) phases.  

Interphase consists of G1 phase, S phase and G2 phase. G1 and G2 phases are the Gap phases in which cell grows physically in size, synthesizes cell organelles and important proteins. During S phase, DNA replication and centrosome duplication takes place.  

In this way, interphase prepare cells for mitosis.
