These flow of energy begins with a group of organisms called PRODUCERS, which are organisms capable of producing their own food in form of organic molecules used as fuel. This process is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS. An example of this producers, plants, contain unique green pigments called CHLOROPHYLL which they use to capture light energy from the sun. They use this energy to power the synthesis of organic molecules (glucose), which they eventually break down to release usable form of energy (ATP) to power their physiological functioning.

In an ecological system called food chain, producers serve as the beginner in the flow of energy. They are consumed by organisms called CONSUMERS. Only about 10% of energy consumed by individual organisms is converted to biomass, the rest is lost as heat.

The food molecules (plants and other producers) are eaten by consumers and the absorbed. These molecules (glucose) are taken in, broken down and the freed energy is used to power the animal's movement and physiological functioning. This process is called CELLULAR RESPIRATION, and results in the release of Carbondioxide (CO2), water and ATP (energy storage molecule). The energy in this ATP is released by breaking down the ATP into ADP and Pi (inorganic phosphate), which is then used to power all activities in the organism.
