Through the capsule it passes through trabecules containing small blood vessels, nerves and lymphatic vessels. This trabecule divides the tonsils into lobules.

The nerves that supply the tonsil of the palatin originate from the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve through the lower palatine nerve, and from the tonsillar branches of the glossopharyngeal nerve. The glossopharyngeal nerve continues through the palatine tonsils and innervates 1/3 of the posterior tongue to give a general sensation and taste. This nerve is most likely to be damaged during tonsillectomy, which causes a reduction in general sensation and taste sensation to the third of the back of the tongue.
