There's a possibility that the patient with colostomy would have not enough knowledge in treating himself at home. In order to help the patient, the nurse should evaluate first the patient's cognitive, physical, and emotional capabilities in order to know the patient's willingness to be responsible for caring his colostomy and also for his mastery in doing the tasks assigned to him. The nurse should also provide references for additional information and support to the patient in his independence in  taking care of himself.
