When a child of any age, especially a 2-year-old child, is hospitalized for the repair of tetralogy of Fallot, they may squat. It has been observed many times. It will not hurt the child in any way. Squatting will actually help the child because it gives the child better hemodynamics. It will help give more blood flow and also increases intra-abdominal pressure. The nurse should not call for help, or move the child to another position because it could cause the child more pain and be counterproductive. The nurse should only observe and assist if needed.
