Compare and contrast continental shelves and slopes.

Continental shelf refers to a gradual sloping terminal of a continent, which elongates underneath the ocean, while the continental slope is an ocean basin characteristic, which inclines steeply down from the continental shelf.  

The continental shelves are the shallow segments of the ocean floor just off the coast of continents and are gently sloping. On the other hand, continental slopes refer to the steeper inclines, which takes place in between the abyssal plains and continental shelves.
