Rice, wheat, and maize are commonly cultivated in cereal. Cereals are known to be rich in minerals, vitamins, fats and proteins, carbohydrates, which provides more energy. Cereals play an important and largest contribution to human nutrition. The major cereals in the world are rice, wheat and maize.

Rice is the most important food crop of the developing world and the staple food of more than half of the world's population. Rich in nutrients and vitamins and minerals, it an excellent source of complex carbohydrates. Nine out of every ten people in the world who eat rice are Asian.

Wheat is the most important source of carbohydrate in a majority of countries. Wheat starch is easily digested, as is most wheat protein. Wheat contains minerals, vitamins and fats (lipids), and with a small amount of animal or legume protein added is highly nutritious.

Maize is also used in making ethanol and other biofuels. Maize is widely cultivated throughout the world, and a greater weight of maize is produced each year than any other grain. In 2014, total world production was 1.04 billion tonnes.

Barley belongs to the group of self-pollinating plants. Barley contains 8 essential amino acids, vitamins of the B group and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. The greatest quantity of produced barley (usually more than 50% of globally produced barley) is used as animal food.
