One student designed an experiment with sugar, water, and sand. The steps of the experiment are shown below.

• Make a thumb size hole at the bottom of an 18 oz styrofoam cup.

• Roll a piece of paper into a tube and place it in the middle of the cup over the

hole.

• Fill the tube with sugar and surround the tube with sand.

• Pull out the paper tube slowly from the cup and then dip the cup into a beaker

of water.

• Watch the sugar cubes dissolve in water to form gaps in the sugar layer.
