• Describe how energy and matter move through the environment under both aerobic
and anaerobic conditions.

Here is the evidence I gathered:
Question 1a: How do cells in plants (i. e., trees, flowers, etc.) get energy?
My answer 1b: Cells in plants get their energy from a process called photosynthesis. This process uses solar energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into energy in the form of carbohydrates.

Question 2a: How do cells in animals (i. e., birds, horses, humans, etc.) get energy?
My answer 2b: Cells in animals get their energy from a process called cellular respiration. Cellular respiration involves the breaking down of the glucose contents of animal food through the process of glycolysis in order to produce the needed chemical energy for the cells.

Question 3a: What is an obligate anaerobe? How do obligate anaerobes, like the bacteria C. botulinum, get energy?
My answer 3b: An obligate anaerobe is a microbe that can't survive in typical atmospheric oxygen concentrations, thus it grows and survives in the absence of oxygen. Fermentation provides energy to obligate anaerobes.

Question 4a: How does each type of organism get the energy it needs for its essential life processes?
My answer 4b: The process by which each organism obtains energy required for living varies depending on the type of organism involved. Plants and animals, for example, are multicellular living creatures that get their energy from cellular sugar oxidation. Microbes, for example, obtain their energy in a variety of ways. Those that cannot survive in the presence of oxygen obtain their energy through fermentation, while those that can survive in the presence of oxygen obtain their energy through chemosynthesis, photosynthesis, saprophytic means, and so on.

Question 5a: How do organisms get the nutrients they need to survive?
My answer 5b: The mechanism by which an organism obtains nutrients is determined by the organism's kind. Plants make their own food, but animals eat both plant and animal-produced food. Some bacteria can make their own sustenance from chemical and inorganic sources, while others eat decaying organic matter.

Question 6a: How do nutrients move through an environment? What drives the movement of nutrients?
My answer 6b: Nutrients are often transported across the environment by migrating from the physical environment into living creatures and then being recycled back into the physical environment. For example, an animal could receive nutrition by eating plants. To stay alive, the animal uses the chemical energy gained from the food. When the animal dies, the nutrients in its body return to the soil and are re-absorbed by plants. The transport of nutrients in the ecosystem is driven by nutrient cycles.
