Thinking about psychologist Lev Vygotsky's theory of child's play, list five favorite toys, or "pivots," from your childhood. For example, doll, wooden blocks, tricycle, pretend telephone, jump rope. Then list what role you think each served in learning an important task. For example, perhaps you wanted to learn how to take care of another person. Obviously, a child does not have the ability to take care of the needs of another person. You may practice taking care of a doll while pretending that you are a doctor or a parent in order to learn these skills. Next, thinking of the age you were when each of these toys were your favorite, list which of Erik Erikson's eight stages you think you were in at that time. Then describe how each toy would have helped you accomplish the particular task of that stage. Lastly, describe the schema you might have had then of each toy and how your schema of that toy has evolved over the years.
