05.07 Space Technology Assignment Part One
1. Electromagnetic waves can carry more data at higher frequencies. Why would a scientist opt to transmit data at a lower frequency instead?
A scientist opt to transmit data at a lower frequency instead because lower frequencies transmit data farther.
2. What are the limitations of sending information using electromagnetic waves?
The limitations of sending information using electromagnetic waves is that when the electromagnetic waves move outward in all directions, wave transmitters need to be focused to transmit their signals to a single specified location.
3. What are the differences between analog and digital signals?
The difference is analog signals are represented by the sine waves and the digital signal is represented by square waves.
4. What are the advantages of using digital signals over analog signals?
Digital signals do not pass noise along, so the sound heard is likely very close to the signal that was sent. Digital signals also can be stored more easily than analog signals.
5. Using reliable internet sources, identify three ways we use analog and digital signals in our everyday lives.
We use analog and digital signals in our everyday lives with the radio, the cell phone and with our own computers. our computers and our cell phones are all digital now but radio's are still considered analog. Radio telescopes explore space by using radio waves and signals to almost like scan space and collect data like a sonar in a submarine.
Part Two
1. Describe how radio telescopes are used to explore space.
Radio waves from space are sensed by a gigantic parabolic reflector, which concentrates them toward the top of a focusing antenna. A radio receptor converts the radio waves into electrical signals which are amplified and then transmitted to the center of the parabola.
2. How are radio waves used on Earth?
Various frequencies of radio waves are used for television and FM and AM radio broadcasts, military communications, mobile phones, ham radio, wireless computer networks, and numerous other communications applications. Most radio waves pass freely through Earth's atmosphere.

3. Why do radio telescopes convert radio waves (analog signals) to electrical (digital) signals for analysis? (Hint: What did the article say about the advantages of digital signals?)
Radio telescopes are devices used to capture radio light waves, bring it to focus, overdraw it and use the data for processing and analysis. These radio light waves, that are raw analog signals are converted into digital signal so as to create and distinguish fine details in the universe.
