04.05 The Carbon Cycle Activity Worksheet Instructions: Answer the questions below using the reference images. You will submit your completed worksheet.

Part One

Text Version

Using the diagram above, match the description to the corresponding location in the carbon cycle model. Provide the letter only.
1. Carbon dioxide is converted to sugar used for food.
2. Carbon trapped in fossil fuels is converted to carbon dioxide.
3. Organic carbon is converted to fossil fuels.
4. Carbon dioxide is converted to carbonates.
5. Sugar is broken down and converted to carbon dioxide.
1. Location B

Plants (tree in the diagram) utilize carbon dioxide to make sugars. They do this through the process of photosynthesis which yields the carbohydrate glucose which is subsequently used in various biochemical pathways of the plant, and by other animals.

2. Location G
Here we see a factory which gives off gaseous emissions. The factory is using fossil fuels for its processes (which we can see from the arrow to the left of E). Burning of fossil fuels such as natural gas or oil yields carbon dioxide which is subsequently returned to the atmosphere.
3. Location E
Fossil fuels are formed through processes that follow the decomposition of dead matter (plants and animals). These processes take place under high pressure, and generally involve anaerobic decomposition of the dead matter. These yield fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline (to name a few).
4. Location H
In this location we see that carbon dioxide is entering a water body. Here carbon dioxide dissolves to yield a solution of carbon dioxide and water that identifies as carbonic acid which comprises of two salts, carbonates and bicarbonates.
5. Location
Sugars, such as glucose, are used by living organisms in cellular respiration -which is a biochemical processes that results in the production of carbon dioxide and water from glucose. These process is seen in plants, animals and various other living entities.

Part Two

Text Version

Using the diagram above, answer the following questions:
6. True or False. The arrow labeled C represents a transfer of chemical energy to mechanical energy. Explain why this is true or false.
7. True or False. The arrow labeled A represents a transfer of solar energy to chemical energy. Explain why this is true or false.
8. Which arrow or arrows represent a release of carbon dioxide? What process is occurring at the arrow(s) you selected?
9. Which arrow or arrows indicate a process that cycles carbon from living or nonliving organisms? Describe the process or processes you selected.
10. Which arrow or arrows represent reactions that demonstrate a conservation of mass and energy? Explain your answer.
6. C is false. What is going on there is actually a transformation of mechanical energy to the chemical energy stored in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The burning of the fossil fuel produces mechanical energy which is stored in the chemical bonds of CO2 hence the statement is false

7. A is true. Solar energy refers to energy from the sun, this energy is trapped from Tue sun and stored in chemical bonds in glucose, and starch molecules during photosynthesis.

8. C represents the release of carbon dioxide by the burning of fossil fuels.

9. B, C,D, E
B refers to photosynthesis in which plants take in atmospheric carbon dioxide, C refers to the burning of fossil rules which releases atmospheric carbon dioxide, D refers to the dissolution of atmospheric carbon dioxide in water bodies to form carbonates in water, E refers refers the return of organic carbon to the soil by dead organisms
10. A and C
A shows the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy, C shows the conversion of mechanical energy to chemical energy
