THE BOOK IS FENCES BY AUGUST WILSON (THE BODY BIOGRAPHY NEEDS TO FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS:
For your chosen character, you will be creating a Body Biography—a visual and written portrait showing several aspects of the character’s life within the play Fences by August Wilson.

You may use print paper (or butcher paper), free draw, and submit a picture. You may use a digital platform and submit. Please submit the final project through Canvas at the end of the unit.

Requirements—Although we expect your biography to contain additional dimensions, your portraits must contain the following:

· Significant or important events, choices, and changes involving your character

· Visual symbols

· Original text from the book

· The five most important quotes by or about your character

Constructing the Body—You will incorporate the ideas below into your biography; however, you should be creative an go above and beyond these ideas.

1. Placement—Carefully choose the placement of your text and artwork. For example, the area where your character’s heart would be might be appropriate for illustrating the important relationships within his or her life. The head might be right for important thoughts or dreams. What else?

2. Spine—This could be the person’s objective within the story. What is the most important goal(s) for your character? What drives the character’s thoughts and actions? How can you illustrate this spine?

3. Virtues and Vices—What are your characters most admirable qualities? Worst qualities? How can you make us visualize them?

4. Color—Colors are often symbolic. What colors do you often associate with your character? Why? How can you effectively work these colors into your presentation?

5. Symbols—What objects can you associate with your character that illustrates that person’s essence? Are there objects mentioned with the story itself that you could use?

6. Mirror, Mirror—Consider how your character appears to others on the surface and what you know about the character’s inner self. Do these images agree with each other or clash? What does this tell you about your character?

7. Fences—How do fences play a role in your character’s life? Think about his or her physical and metaphorical fences. What does this tell you about your character? How can you make us visualize them?

8. Ch-ch-changes—Trace the change in your character within the text and artwork on your biography.

9. Conflicts—What major conflicts does your character encounter? What does this say about his or her personality? How can you make us visualize them?
