Bill and Ted are best friends. Bill eats a lot of spicy food. He eats super spicy chiles with no problems. Ted must avoid spicy food. Even slightly spicy food makes Ted’s mouth burn and eyes water too much! Bill and Ted have different explanations for their experiences:

Ted’s Claim:Bill has nerve damage. Something must be wrong with how his nerve cells work.

Bills Claim:Ted must have a gene for super sensitive receptors on his tongue.

To help settle the argument, researchers looked at the shape of the pain receptor in Bill and Ted’s mouth. The results are shown in the model to the right.
