Not every ecosystem has large areas of similar vegetation, as the habitats in your study do. In areas where patches of
more visually varied habitats exist, individual snails regularly
move into and out of different visual surroundings. For snails
in this situation, having or not having bands does not
necessarily offer any protection by camouflage. In fact, in
these cases, predators may learn to spot the most common
phenotype and selectively feed on those snails. Suppose you
released another 100 snails in a more varied habitat, with the
numbers of each phenotype shown in the blue circles. Which
phenotype would you expect birds to begin to recognizing as
food? How might this affect the allele frequencies of the
banding gene over time?
