The autosomal recessive trait of phenylketonuria (PKU) runs in the Pederson family. Individuals with PKU are not able to metabolize excess of the amino acid phenylalanine, and as a result must be conscious to limit their dietary intake to avoid build up and harmful effects. Rochelle and Fabian Pederson are planning to have children. Rochelle lives with PKU. Fabian is free of the disease. On Fabian and his side of the family are very proud of their characteristic curly black hair. The couple are wondering the chances of their child having their father's curly hair and lack of PKU. A genetic counselor tells the couple that the genes for PKU and hair curliness are both located on chromosome 12.
