It is the protein gradient in the thylakoid space that causes the production/generation of ATP molecules. During the process of electron transport, H+ ions are pumped across the thylakoid membrane and a electrochemical proton gradient is attained that drives the synthesis of ATP in the stroma.

Now when atp synthase complexes are reversed, H+ ions are not pumped across the thylakoid membrane which destabilizes the electrochemical proton gradient and lead to halt of production of ATP
