Is it wrong to claim that a trait evolved so the species involved can survive better? yes--traits evolve because individuals with that trait survive better and reproduce more. no--the entire point of evolution is to avoid extinction, so alleles stay present. yes--traits evolve so populations can survive better. no--if the species survives better, than the individuals in that species do, too?
