Sickle cell anemia is caused by a recessive allele. A person must have a recessive allele from each parent to have the disease. A person who is heterozygous for sickle cell anemia does not have the disease. In
addition, this person is protected against malaria. Malaria is a disease that is common in countries in
Africa where people are more likely to have sickle cell anemia. A person who is heterozygous for sickle
cell anemia is somehow protected from malaria.
Assume that S represents the normal allele and that s represents the allele 2 points
for sickle cell anemia. What is the genotype for a person who is
heterozygous for sickle cell anemia?
