During fertilization, a zygote inherits DNA from both the sperm and the egg, but the mitochondria and its associated DNA a zygote contains are contributed solely by the
egg, not the sperm. Additionally, during the process of fertilization, the expected
outcome is that each chromosome from the egg has a homologous partner found in
the sperm; with the exception of the Y chromosome in male zygotes. Explain the
differences in patterns of inheritance between the genes in the nuclear DNA, the
mitochondrial DNA and the Y chromosome.
