The word 'species' is a technical term in biology (spelt the same for singular and plural) and was coined from observations which indicated that living things were not lots of different individuals but were in sets the same at every generation for that particular set. For example, cats always produce kittens so are the cat species and dogs always produce puppies so are the dog species.

In modern times the definition of the word 'species' as defined above has become unacceptable because the theory of speciation (how do new species arise?) depends on mutations within a species leading to new species over long time scales.

What is called 'a species' is actually a single cell which divides to make another the SAME as itself. Many species have an extra step in that process of its division - a body stage - in which the division is completed with not just one new cell the SAME as itself, but thousands.
