Explain why gametes cannot be made by mitosis

Gametes cannot be made by mitosis because mitosis does not reduce the chromosome number of the daughter cells.

WHAT IS MITOSIS?

MITOSIS is the kind of cell division in which a single parent cell results in two daughter cells that are genetically identical to one another. The two daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

WHAT ARE GAMETES?

Gametes are sex cells used for sexual reproduction in certain organisms. Two gametes (one from male called sperm and the other from female called egg) comes together to form a zygote which later grows into a full organism. Note, these two gametes must possess half number of chromosomes as the parent organism.

WHY MITOSIS CANNOT PRODUCE GAMETES?

Since mitosis gives rise to same number of chromosomes as parent cell, it is impossible for mitosis to make gametes, which must be half number of chromosomes as parent cell.

For example, a somatic human cell contains 46 chromosomes. This means that gametes must contain 23 chromosomes each. However, MITOSIS results in two daughter cells with 46 chromosomes each.

Hence, mitosis cannot make gametes because it does not reduce the chromosome number of the daughter cells.
