Glycolysis is a pathway mechanism in cellular respiration which  involves one molecule of glucose being converted into two molecules of pyruvate, two hydrogen ions and two molecules of water.

The Investment/preparatory phase the addition of 2 ATPs which help in the phosphorylation of glucose in order to make it ready for breakdown and subsequent reactions.

The Yield/payoff phase involves different substrate level phosphorylation processes. The process allows cells to gain two ATP and two NADH compounds after which glucose is partially oxidized to form pyruvate which is the end product.
