What happens to the wolf (predator) population? Why?

Well this is kind of an unclear question, but wolves are predators and the less the prey (their main food source), the more competition there will be for food and slowly, the wolves that don't get enough food for survival, they will die. This will then decrease the amount of wolves and the number of genes that could have been passed down. Creating more of a "common look" for the wolves of that pack, or maybe even many more. The decrease of wolves will also result in an overpopulation of prey which can then actually harm the landscape because the wolves are there to "regulate the population" of prey. This can actually do more harm than good because if the prey are overpopulating, then the grass (a potential food source for prey), will be more damaged because regrowth isn't having a chance.
