During physical education class, students ran one mile. After their run, the
students recorded changes they experienced. Some of the changes the
students recorded are listed below:
• Sweating
• Muscle cramps
• Decreased energy
• Increased heart rate
• Increased breathing rate
• Increased thirst
Increased body temperature
Some students had to run 2 miles before experiencing any of the above
changes.
Directions:
Write an essay explaining homeostasis and how it was affected by the
activity in gym class. Make sure to include a detailed rationale or
explanation as to why some students experienced changes after running one
mile while others had to run two miles. What reasons would account for this
difference?
Select two changes experienced by the students and explain how each
change can represent a homeostatic mechanism. Include information as to
the cause or purpose behind the change and how such a response aids in the
process of maintaining homeostasis.
NOTE: Use the attached rubric to help guide you in writing a detailed and
accurate essay. Remember DO NOT plagiarize. Plagiarism includes, but is
not limited to, using someone else's work as your own and/or copying and
pasting material from online sources.
