Genetic engineering is the process of making changes in the DNA code of living organisms. It can be used to cure diseases, improve food
crops, and even treat genetic disorders. Scientists are hopeful that
genetic engineering will provide cures for diseases such as cystic
fibrosis, Alzheimer's Disease, and diabetes. Genetic engineering has
been used in the production of insulin, vaccines, and antibodies. Even
with so many positive applications of genetic engineering, there are
some notable concerns. Which of these is NOT a concern related to
genetic engineering?
Genetic engineering can be used to produce plants
A)
that are more resistant to insects, fungi, and bacteria.
Genes engineered to make a plant resistant to pests,
B) disease, and herbicides may transfer to undesired
species, creating unusually robust weeds,
There are ethical and social concerns regarding the
potential blending of animal and human DNA as well
C)
as the social and legal controls that should be placed
on research
There are health concerns related to GMOS, including
that idea that genetically engineered vegetables may
D)
contain genes that could transfer to humans when
ingested, producing mutations
