What is anatomy?

Anatomy, a field in the biological sciences concerned with the identification and description of the body structures of living things. Gross anatomy involves the study of major body structures by dissection and observation and in its narrowest sense is concerned only with the human body.

The branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms, especially as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts.

Example of an anatomy

The study of the structure of the human leg is an example of a study in the field of anatomy. Animal anatomy is also called zoomy or zootomy; vegetable anatomy, phytotomy; and human anatomy, anthropotomy.

Two major types of anatomy

1) Gross (macroscopic) anatomy is the study of anatomical structures that can be seen by the naked eye, such as the external and internal bodily organs.

2) Microscopic anatomy is the study of tiny anatomical structures such as tissues and cells.
