The purpose of this lab is to understand how relative dating and absolute dating are used to determine the age of rock layers  

Outline the steps of the procedure in full sentences.  Prepare for the lab by reading through the student guide.  Open the virtual lab and use the law of superposition to determine the relative ages of layers.  Read about relative dating and the law of superposition. Examine the two outcrops and determine the relative ages of the rock layers based on the law of superposition. Arrange the rock layers from oldest to youngest. Repeat if you get it wrong until you get it right. Write the names of the rock layers in order of their relative ages and write their descriptions in Table A.  Use index fossils to determine the relative ages of layers. Read about ammonites, crinoids, and trilobites. Examine the two outcrops and determine the relative ages of the rock layers based on the law of superposition. Arrange the rock layers in order from oldest to youngest. Repeat if you get it wrong until you get it right. Write the names of the rock layers in the order of their relative ages and write their descriptions in Table B.  Use the law of superposition and the principle of cross-cutting relationships to determine the relative ages of layers. Read about the cross-cutting principle. Examine the outcrop. Based on the law of superposition and the principle of cross-cutting relationships, determine the relative ages of the rock layers in the outcrop. Arrange the rock layers from oldest to youngest. Repeat if you get it wrong until you get it right. Write the names of the rock layers in the order of their relative ages in Table C of the Data section of this guide.  Use a mass spectrometer to determine the absolute ages of rocks. Read about absolute dating. Drag the samples from the rock layers to the mass spectrometer. Record the absolute age of the rock layers in Table D.  Use the data in Table D to arrange the rock layers in the geologic time scale from oldest to youngest. Repeat if you get it wrong until you get it right. Write the names of the rock layers in the order of their relative and absolute ages and write the name of the periods the rock layers were formed then write the name of the unknown fossil in Table E.
