A large amount of energy is needed to produce food. In all parts of the world, the energy used to process, distribute, and cook food is greater than the energy used to grow it. In the United States, it is estimated that every Calorie of food on our dinner tables has required 9 Calories of energy to get there. Half a Calorie accounts for the energy used on the farm. The other 8.5 Calories account for energy for processing, packaging, distribution, and cooking. In rural India, twice as much energy goes into cooking a kilogram of rice as was invested in producing it. Energy shortages, such as a shortage of wood for cooking, have caused environmental problems such as deforestation.
