Modeling Organ Systems In this task, you’ll develop a model to explain a body function performed by organ systems. You’ll then examine your model and answer questions to analyze it.

Time to complete: 3 to 4 hours

Choose your own materials to make the model. You may choose to draw a model on paper, make the model using a computer program, or construct a 3-D model. Here are some materials you could use:

Paper
Colored pencils or markers
Photograph editing software
Modeling clay
Poster board
Corkboard
Scissors
Ruler
Part A: Build a Model

Question 1
Pick a body function that requires at least two different organ systems to perform. The function can be involuntary or voluntary. Design a model that shows how these systems work together. You may want to localize the function to a specific body part. For example, running involves many muscles and bones, which may make it difficult to model. However, you can focus on a specific motion for running, such as bending the knee joint.

In a paragraph, explain why it requires at least two body systems to perform the function you selected.

Question 2
Now design your model in whatever format you prefer. Here are some examples:

Using graphic design software to model the process.
Drawing a poster to show the process.
Making a computer flowchart using diagrams of the organs.
Creating a 3-D model from clay or paper.
Producing a video to show the process.
When designing the model, be sure that it accomplishes these goals:

Clearly communicates the process through visual aids, words, or both.
Identifies the major organs involved in the process.
Identifies the major systems involved in the process.
Shows the biological hierarchy of one organ.
Identifies at least one of the major tissue types found in that organ.
Presents a picture of cells that form that specific tissue.
Check with your teacher for additional guidelines. When you have completed your model, use the Insert Image button to insert a screenshot or image of it in the answer space.

Question 5
Pick one of the body parts shown in your model. How would a disease or injury to this organ affect the process you modeled? How would it affect the body as a whole?
