CHAPTER 2 CHAPTER ASSESSMENT
Applying Scientific Methods
Mapping techniques can be used on other planets besides Earth. In 1996, the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) launched a satellite called the Mars Global Surveyor toward Mars. One of
the purposes of the satellite was to map the surface of Mars. Based largely on the data provided by this
mission, NASA launched another satellite called the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to gather more
detailed information about Mars's surface and subsurface. The satellite reached Mars in 2006 and, using
the friction of the Martian atmosphere, gradually slowed into orbit around the planet. Its primary science
phase was scheduled to last two years.
The Mar Reconnaissance Orbiter carries a camera that has 5 times better resolution than the camera
on the Mars Global Surveyor. It can distinguish objects on the surface of Mars that are 1 meter across.
The satellite also has a spectrometer that identifies minerals on Mars's surface, as well as an instrument
that probes the subsurface using radar waves. All of the information collected by the Mars Global
Surveyor and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter are transmitted to Earth in the form of radio waves.
1. The distance from Earth to Mars ranges between 78,000,000 km and 380,000,000 km, depending
on the time of year. The speed of light is 300,000 km/s. Calculate the minimum and maximum
time it takes for data transmitted by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to reach Earth.
What are the advantages of using satellites for proiect like these instead

You will be galileo perform the experiment to determine if objects with different mass fall at the same, or different, rates in the air and in a vacuum. before you conduct your experiment, you need to form a hypothesis. a hypothesis is a prediction of what you think will happen in the experiment. the hypothesis is a statement that describes “if” a certain set of circumstances are present “then” there will be a specific result that will occur.record your hypothesis here: record the results from step one of the experiment (dropping the objects in the air): first trial: second trial: third trial: record the results from step two of the experiment (dropping the objects in a vacuum): first trial: second trial: third trial: did the experiment support your hypothesis? using the data from your experiment, describe why you believe your hypothesis was either proven or disproven.what forces were acting on the objects dropped in the air? what force was acting on the objects dropped in the vacuum? part two: comparing forceschoose two forces and compare and contrast these forces. you must provide two ways that they are alike and two ways that they are different. you may make a list, write in paragraph form, or make a chart.choose two forces and compare and contrast these forces. these must be different forces than used in the prior question. provide two ways that they are similar and two ways that they are different. you may make a list, write it out, or make a chart.

The earth consists of a variety of different organisms. despite their diversity, however, some similarities on the structural and metabolic levels may be seen. these similarities can be attributed to a. similarities among organisms in their proteins and nucleic acids. b. the ability of organisms to readily adapt to sudden environmental changes. c. similarities in organisms' habitats and niches. d. the ability of all organisms to interbreed and produce new species.
