In order to assemble the organic compounds that are necessary for life, enzymes must break down food into their building blocks. What would happen if someone was not able to produce enough amylase? Simple sugars would not be obtained from carbohydrates. Amino acids would not be obtained from proteins. Fatty acids would not be obtained from lipids.
