If the nitrogen is concentrated in one area but at a low concentration, then Species A may have formed nodules because it is closer to the concentrated nitrogen. Species B didn't because the nitrogen that is active is being taken by Species A.

The plant with nodules would grow more than the one without. This is because the nodules give more surface area so the plant can absorb more nitrogen and grow more. Without the nodules the plant would suffer and not grow due to lack of nitrogen.
