The pentose phosphate pathway is an alternative metabolic pathway for degradation of glucose which generates a nucleotide synthesis precursor. In the first portion of this pathway, glucose-6-phosphate is converted to the following enolate intermediate in a series of steps. This intermediate can then decarboxylate to form ribulose-5-phosphate, the nucleotide precursor. Draw a curved arrow mechanism showing this decarboxylation.
