Glyphosate kills plants, but is considered nontoxic, or of low toxicity, to animals. Why? Animals have a resistant version of this enzyme, which binds glyphosate in an inactive conformation. Animals do not synthesize tyrosine by this pathway. Mammals have an additional pathway that can compensate for the inhibition of EPSP synthase. Animals do not have biosynthetic pathways for some aromatic amino acids.
