it is possible as fossils are found in SEDIMENTARY rocks, rocks which are compacted together with extreme pressure for millions of years. fossils can sometimes withstand these pressures, but there are some fossils that can easily break down and/or decompose. due to this fact, the probability of finding fossils is very low, but if you are lucky, you can find fossils in different layers.

as rocks will have gone through a lot of different processes to become what they are today. the story of each rock differs, depending on the zone, it's feel and texture, etc. observing rocks at several different locations is only one of the criteria to actually get a sequence of events and of what this rock has gone through.
