There are two basic types of metamorphic rocks  

1)Foliated     2) non foliated  

Foliated rocks are formed after exposure to extreme heat and pressure and will result in a parallel arrangement and banded appearance. Examples of foliated rocks are phyllite, schist, and slate

Non foliated rocks do not have a layered or banded shape. No foliated rocks are formed in those conditions where the temperature is high but the pressure is low.  

marble and quartzite are examples for non-foliated metamorphic rocks.  

Grain arrangement inside the rocks also classify the foliated arrangement further
