It is interesting to see a hybrid that is fertile since most animal hybrids are not. The infertility is mostly due to chromosomes that are too different in both species to match up and go through the process of meiosis to produce viable sperm or egg cells. In the case of the wholphins we must conclude that the chromosomes of the two species are similar enough to allow them to pair up and have a successful meiosis. The point that they are diploid confirms this. They have the same chromosome number and are able to pair up.
