Acorn breeder was interested to improve protein content of grains for livestock feed. he initiated two breeding populations and handled them separately. population 1 involved a cross between high yielding parent with low protein content and a high protein parent (pp) with no marked yield benefit. population 2 involved a high protein parent (pp) crossed to a high yield potential parent and two successive crosses to additional genetic backgrounds of high yield potential. all high yield potential parents have low protein content (pp).
a) assuming that protein content is under a single recessive gene control and a random mating condition in both populations, calculate the mean protein content for both populations and compare the results. assume mean protein content of genotype pp=18% and pp=10%.
b) calculate the average effect and components of genotypic value in both populations and compare the results.
