The males in general have a different role in the survival of the species. The role of the males is usually protecting the territory, as by doing so they fend off competition for the food sources, which are crucial for the survival of the species. Also, the males are the ones that put themselves first in line when it comes to defense, be it of the females or the offspring, and they would risk their life in order to provide protection for them. When the roles of the females and the males are combined, than they usually have the right ''receipt'' for survival of the species.
