The association between Oahu amakhi and Kauai amakhi can be demonstrated by the concept of competitive exclusion principle.  

The competitive exclusion principle in ecology is sometimes also known as the Gause's law. According to this principle, the two species fighting for the similar restricting resource cannot cohabit at the persistent population values. If one of the species even exhibit the slightest advantage over another, then the one with the benefit will dominate in the prolonged time.
